Oscar Powell Bush, age 95, of Franklin, KY left this earth Saturday February 25, 2017 in Bowling Green, KY from cancer complications.
Services are under the direction of Gilbert Funeral Home where services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 1, 2017 with burial to follow in the McKendree Chapel Church Cemetery with military honors by the Simpson County Honor Guard.
He was born in 1921 in Franklin, KY to Otha & Mary Verna Bush.
Powell married Mazell Krantz in 1941. They moved to Louisville and he worked for Reynolds aluminum company as a machinist. In 1943 he was drafted into the Army during World War II at age 23 and served two years traveling through England, France, Belgium, Holland, and spending most of his service in Germany in the infantry. When Powell returned from the service he worked many years in the aluminum industry and later owned and operated his own business until retiring to Franklin, KY in 1987. Mazell passed in 1989.
Powell found a new partner in Joyce Kirby (Cook) and they were married in 1992. They would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this June. One of Powell’s favorite pastimes was fishing and he shared this love with all he knew. His Grandchildren remember many special moments while fishing together. The family joke is that the fish would jump right into the boat with Papaw while the rest of us never got a bite.
Powell is survived by his wife, Joyce; his daughters, Carol Deeb (Mike) of Louisville, KY. and Phyllis Grigsby (Freddie) of Leitchfield, KY.; two step-sons, David Kirby (Jeannie) and Darryl Kirby both of Franklin, KY.; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. We will keep him in our hearts and he will be missed.
Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, February 28, 2017 and from 6:00 AM until funeral service time on Wednesday.
Expressions may be made to the Franklin Church of Christ or to http://give.cru.org/0911430 to help support his great granddaughter Zoe on her summer mission project to Cypress. Where she will be planting a Christian campus ministry at the University of Nicosia and 2 other campuses.
