James L McGee

December 11, 1930 — July 21, 2020

Mr. James L. McGee, age 89, of Franklin, KY, entered into rest Tuesday, July 21st, 2020, at 12:30 AM at the Hopkins Nursing Facility in Woodburn, KY.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbert Funeral Home.  A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 25th, 2020, at 10:00 AM at Sulphur Spring Church Cemetery in Simpson County.

James was born on December 11th, 1930 in Logan County, KY to the late Lambert Solomon McGee and the late Mary “Mame” Austin McGee.  He is also preceded in death by 5 sisters, Mary Stark, Betty Freedle, Eddie Lou Bishoff, Bernice Bilbrey, Clara June Duke and 2 brothers, William McGee and Virgil McGee.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Mary Ann Wolf McGee, 3 children, Mark McGee of Franklin, KY, Kenneth McGee (Anita) of Franklin, KY and David McGee of Hendersonville, TN; 3 grandchildren, Carolyn Bandy (Jeremy) of Fountain Run, KY, Austin McGee of Franklin, KY and Michael McGee of Franklin, KY; 1 great grandson, Silas Jackson Bandy; 3 step grandchildren, Chris Plamondon (Kristin), Amanda Plamondon (Frank Briar) and Hannah Bess (Nick Groves); 6 step great-grandchildren, Jenna Bailey, Tristan Bailey, Cayden Plamondon, Hunter Hanley, Haisley Bandy and Kimber Plamondon; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews.

James was a veteran of the US Army.  He served 18 months in Germany and then in the Reserves for many years after.  James was a farmer for most of his life.  After retirement, he went to work for the Simpson County Road Department where he retired from there as well.  James was a member and deacon of Sulphur Spring Baptist Church.  He served several years as a Sunday school teacher and a youth leader at Middleton Baptist Church.  James was a member of the VFW Post #5706.  He was a member of the Simpson County Farm Bureau Board for 50 years and 18 of those years as he served as the President.  James served several years as a 4H-leader.  He loved to raise a garden and grow vegetables just to give them away to others.  James was also an avid UK Basketball fan.
