Harold Dean (Red) Burton, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Maple Cottage Assisted Living in Portland, Tennessee surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service will be held on October 29, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation starting at 1:00 p.m., at Franklin Presbyterian Church, 201 North College Street, Franklin, KY. A private interment will be held at Red River Cemetery in Adairsville, KY.
Harold was born August 17, 1938, in Millersville, TN to the late Charles Oscar Burton and Gladys Odell (Marlin) Burton. He worked in the upholstery business most of his life, and he was a master at doing what he loved. He was also passionate about restoring old cars and was sought after for his skills refinishing old car interiors. He was a member of the local car club and enjoyed attending car shows. He loved talking about his cars and had a collection of trophies he held on proud display.
On March 10, 1972, he married Betty Jean Hampton Burton. Harold and Jean were dedicated to working as partners in their Burton's Upholstery business. Together, they spent much of their free time working in their garden and harvesting the fruits of their labor. Harold was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church, where he performed custodial duties and took pleasure in providing help with some of their upholstery needs.
Harold is predeceased by his wife, Jean. He is also predeceased by his son, Uel Dean Burton, grandson, Brent Whitson, brothers, Ray Burton, Donald Burton, and Roger Burton, and sister Shirley Fye Southeard. He will be remembered by his children Harold Tommy Burton and Charles Allen Burton; his stepchildren Jeffrey (Fran) Mandrell, Jeanette (Toby) Scherencel, Mark (Valerie) Mandrell, Cindy (John) Logan, Melody (Scott) Jenkins and Teresa (Dan, deceased) Murphy; his grandchildren Marissa Mandrell (Chris) Barrett, Lauren Mandrell, Clare Purcell (Connor) Welsh, Madden Purcell, Andrew Scherencel, Amber Scherencel (Zack) Dorn, Jeffrey Mandrell, Scott Mandrell, Andy Mandrell, Amanda Whitson, Sarah (Max) Goldstein, Jenny Logan, David Logan, Beth Jenkins (Brian) Wilson, Bryson Jenkins, Madison Jenkins and Tanner Murphy; and his great grandchildren Riley, Bennett, Charleigh, Adelaide, and Griffin, as well as his nieces and nephews Brian (Amber) Burton, Shawn (Ronnie) Burton, Mike (Gina) Burton, Lisa Burton Ratiff, and Michele (Todd) Kitchens.
The family extends special thanks and appreciation to Harold’s special caregiver Cathy Eaton, the members of Franklin Presbyterian Church, and the workers at Maple Cottage Assisted Living, for their excellent help and care.
