A former Franklin resident, Douglas Holland Young, age 95, of Sandy Springs, GA, passed away Saturday, November 9.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbert Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, November 22, 2019 at the Greenlawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday November 21, 2019 at Gilbert Funeral Home.
He is the son of the late Elmer Henry and the late Winnie Belle Holland Young. His wife of 65 years, Margaret Hatter Young, and one brother, Donald Young, predeceases him.
He is survived by his brother, Elmer Dorris Young (Nancy) of Nashville, TN, and daughter Marilyn O’Dell and son Lawrence Douglas Young (Kyle) of Sandy Springs, GA. He has three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Born in Bowling Green, KY, Mr. Young grew up in Nashville, attending East High School. After graduating, he moved to Franklin to assist his father in farming. Due to a childhood eye injury, he was unable to serve in the military, but he worked at a munitions plant in Nashville during the war. He worked for a time at Gillespie’s Dry Goods before joining the Kentucky Department of Highways. He retired as District Resident Engineer after 35 years. An avid golfer, he enjoyed attending the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, GA for many years with friends Hal and JoAnn Jackson. He enjoyed playing cards with his many friends and wintering in Pompano Beach, FL.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Franklin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the library of First Baptist Church.
